I have known Valerie, the owner of Artistic Floral Design, for several years and I have always found her designs a source of inspiration. She uses fresh quality flowers and there is always something unique and beautiful in her work. Artistic Floral Design has just revamped their websites with over 500 new photos! Please visit www.artisticfloraldesign.com to see some beautiful wedding designs.  A new website with an online store is at www.artisticfloraldesigns.com where you can purchase aisle runners, petals, leaves, candles, crystals and other table decor. When you chose a floral designer as talented as Valerie there will be plenty of inspiration in colors and flowers to design an invitation with the wow factor!

Red & Ivory Placecards

Here are the red & ivory placecards designed for a December wedding. The ivory cardstock was die cut and embossed to match the classic look of the Christmas Wedding Programs. The interior of the placecards told guests that a donation was made to a local charity by the bride and groom in lieu of favors.

Christmas Wedding Programs

I just wanted to post some photos of some work I recently finished for a December wedding at St. Charles Country Club. The program is Pomegranate red with Pearl ribbon. The interior was done with metallic Pearl paper. The label is embossed at the edges. It created a very elegant timeless look! I took some photos before Nicole and her mother came to pick them up at the studio. More photos to come of other pieces I did for this wedding.

Invitation Monogram with Crystal

Although monograms date back to about 350 BC, I am happy to say they are still going strong in the world of weddings. In the hands of a designer monograms can go from plain and boring to real head turners. Monograms add a classic and elegant look to invitations but I like to add a little modern twist to give them some style.  The picture below has a Swarovski Crystal adding some sparkle to the swirl underneath the monogram. Many couples use their custom designed monogram as the logo or symbol of their wedding.  The seal featured below always gets a great reaction when I display it at bridal shows and it makes a great closure for a pocket invitation.

Your Guest List

Escort Cards

It seems as though every bride and groom has questions on the guest list. There are a few techniques that may help make the process a little easier. The first tip I have is to consider how large of a wedding you want. If you have already chosen your ceremony and reception locations find out the maximum capacity that will give you the absolute highest number you can invite. Another consideration is the budget. Limiting the guest list is one of the best ways to control the cost of your wedding because 45-50% of your wedding budget is spent on food and drink. The smaller the guest list, the less you are paying the reception site and that is usually the biggest expense of the wedding.

There are different methods of dividing up the guest list so there is no major battle between the families. One method involves dividing the guest list into three equal parts, the bride and groom, the bride’s parents, and the groom’s parents. All three groups get to invite the same amount of people and if one group has slots left open then they can be filled with any overflow from the other lists. Another method is to have the bride and groom take half the list and the second half is divided between the bride’s parents and the groom’s parents. Dividing the list keeps the elimination process from getting too personal.

When making out the lists start with the members of the bride and groom’s immediate families and all members of the wedding party. Married, engaged and live-in couples must be invited as a couple even if you do not like or have never met one of them. Couples committed in these ways are sent one invitation inviting both of them to the wedding. Single members can be offered the possibility of bringing a guest but it is not required although much appreciated. If you are inviting the officiant and their spouse remember to add them to your list before you move on to next section of possible invitees.

If you must start trimming the guest list it best to eliminate entire groups. It is easier to explain that co-workers, second cousins, etc. were not invited because there was not enough room than to tell someone that they were singled out by not being invited. Make sure you eliminate everyone in that group because it would be difficult to explain why one cousin was invited but not another.

The A List and B List Method of guest lists needs a lot of preplanning in order to succeed. Guests must not know that they were on the B List or there is potential of feeling second best and having hurt feelings. The  first set of invitations and response card return dates must leave enough time to mail out a second round of invitations with another response card date before the wedding. It can be done but so many couples are not prepared to send their invitations out early that there is not enough time to do a second mailing.

I never advise sending out more invitations than you can accommodate guests. Although statistics tell us that 10-20% will send their regrets, it is not always the case especially when the wedding has been long awaited and most guests do not have to travel to attend. When the budget is very limited and the guest list must be kept short, many couples or parents choose to host another less costly party such as a barbeque after they return from the honeymoon to include the entire list of friends and acquaintances. It is less formal which some guests may prefer and it gives everyone a chance to celebrate the event.

Floral Bridesmaid Dress Inspiration

The new trend in bridesmaid dresses is floral prints.  You may have seen them in a number of ads in current magazines. They fit so well with this years trend for soft and romantic. Totally feminine, they can add to the theme of any wedding whether it be Vintage, Art Deco, Country or Beach. Prints can be subdued and sophisticated or bold and bright. Floral bridesmaid dresses can add to the color scheme of the wedding by introducing a second or third color to the palette.

However, some of the best perks about the floral print dress are the following aspects. Because they are not traditionally thought of as a bridesmaid dress, they score a lot of points in the “wear again” factor! Another feature brides love is that a floral print can separate the maid of honor from the rest of the bridesmaids. And last but not least, the floral print dress can contribute to a great one of a kind invitation design. I look to be designing with a lot of florals in the near future.

Maps for Wedding Invitations

Here is an example of a map I just did for Zenab & Ron’s wedding invitation. They are getting married at Tivoli Too! in Laguna Beach, California, a banquet facility that owns three complexes all within the same area. Although Ron thought I could just take the map from Tivoli’s website, it did not work for us. Website maps are often done at a very low resolution and in this case we were concerned about the fuzziness especially being printed on metallic paper. Also the website map was done in brown and blue which did not match the colors of the invitation that was various shades of purple. The website map also showed stars at all three facilities with similar names making it somewhat confusing to guests who might be driving and trying to read the map quickly. I redrew the map only showing the star at the exact facility that Zenab & Ron are getting married at to avoid confusion. The map was printed in black and gray matching the ink colors used on the reception card. When we take the time to draw a map we can customize what you want the map to show and also make sure the resolution and color are what you need!

What a Difference a Ribbon Makes

I took photos of the pine cone invitation with different ribbons so you can see the difference that the choice of ribbon can make. The first photo is of a chocolate satin ribbon. The second photo is of terra cotta raffia giving the invitation a more rustic feel. The third photo is of a wider ribbon in brown with a olive green hint to it. Notice how this third photo is the most elegant looking of the four. And lastly the skinny brown ribbon with a more modern tie. Different looks for different weddings. For brides planning a rustic or outdoor wedding please check out The Whispering Pines Wedding Blog you will find some great ideas for favors, decor and more.

Announcing New Hand Painted Designs

I am proud to announce a new line of invitations. Hand painted invitations are the new offering from Starglow Studios! These designs are painted in acrylics and add a great unique and artistic touch. Now our clients will truly have a “one of a kind” invitation.  The first invitation I painted was perfect for a November wedding. I saw an inspiration board on the My Perfect Palette blog that I designed from. This rustic wedding theme with rich warm colors seemed so beautiful I just had to try painting a pinecone.

Designed Wedding Invitation Envelope

I wanted to post some photos of the envelope I designed for the Purple Orchid Invitation. The orchid design ties the envelope to the invitation and  lets guests know that an invitation to a great event is inside. The second  photo shows the custom designed postage stamp that completes the look.Wedding Invitation Envelopes
